Over the next few months I’m going to explore the sixth sense using all of the clairs.
Short for:
Clairsentience – clear feeling
Clairvoyance – clear seeing
Clairaudience – clear hearing
Claircognizance – clear knowing
Clairalience – clear smelling (also including taste here)
At the start of developing these skills, they can feel very far from clear.
“Did I really feel that, see that hear that or know that?”
But with practice and discernment, the clarity of each of these skills improve.
Everyone has one or more of these capacities. Some people are born with them blazing out into the world. I remember seeing Doreen Virtue (a former famous intuitive – you probably have seen her angel cards if you’re into those) at a conference. I recall her saying she would sometimes eat white bread to tamp down her abilities when they were overwhelming her.
If you’re unsure of what your abilities might be, this series is for you. I’m going to guide you by sharing subtle signs that it might be your gift, ways to connect to that “clair” and examples of that gift as you gain experience with that ability.
Clair-sentience – Clear Feeling
One of my strongest abilities that I’ve honed over the years is clair-sentience. This shows itself when you can feel what other people are feeling (or not feeling). You can feel the energy of a space or connect to the presence of spiritual guides.
Subtle Signs
Have you had these experiences?
You feel goosebumps on your arms, neck, or back when someone tells you something.
You turn your head and notice that someone was looking at you.
You walk into a room of people and they are acting one way, but you are sensing that this is not what they are feeling.
You are attuned to other peoples mood – especially those you live with or work closely to.
Sometimes this develops as a young child out of necessity. A child learns to attune to the best moment to ask a parent for something or wait until later. A child learns when to avoid a parent or how to manage them in certain moods. You might have been the mediator or protector in your family. You might have learned to stay out of sight or hearing. If you see yourself as an empath or a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP), you might be really attuned to this sixth sense.
How to Attune to This Ability
There is no one path to attune to each of these abilities. But here are a few ways to try out.
1. Out of the subtle signs of clairsentience, which ones did you resonate with?
2. The next time this subtle sign happens in your life, tune into what happens in your body or mind that tells you this information:
- Does the space around you feel cool, hot, constrained or vast?
- Does your body tense? Where?
- Do you feel another person’s emotion as your own?
- Do you get squirrely and want to leave a situation?
- What happens to your thoughts? Do they take a different tone or intensity?
3. Sit with another person – a partner, child or friend. This can be in-person or virtually.
- Start by just sitting with one another and noticing if you can connect to what a person is feeling without any words.
- Are they pushing their energy outwards or keeping it close?
- Are they pulling at your energy?
- Do they seem in their body or not very present?
- Then check in with each other and share what you noticed. This a good way to tune into what is “your stuff” and what is “their stuff”. Sometimes sitting quietly attunes you to YOU and what you are really feeling underneath the noise. It’s a great practice to notice what are the signals that it’s yours and what is someone else’s.
- Note your own personal signals that show up that give you a cue – everyone will be slightly different
Real-life Example
With People
As you gain experience with this ability, you will become better at noticing what is someone else’s stuff and what is yours.
When I’m working with someone in a session, sometimes my mind will start to race or I can’t fully focus on what a person is saying. I’ve learned, that this is unusual for me in session. This is often a cue that a person is dissociating AKA not fully in their body. I will double-check that this is them and not me by asking a question, “Do you feel like you’re fully here in your body right now?”
When someone is on the energy healing table, I can sense whether they are grounded or not. When someone becomes more grounded, the frequency in the space around me changes. It becomes heavier, my focus intensifies, it feels calm, it’s easy to take measured breaths.
With Space
Occasionally when I work with someone, the frequency of my healing space changes and resonates with power. For me this feels like everything around me becoming very expansive and bright. It is hard to describe with words. The resonance of the room changes and “hums” differently.
Last summer I was at the hospital waiting for my son in surgery. The surgery waiting room is in a basement room. I couldn’t stay in that room – it was full of many other people’s anxiety. I felt squirrely, the room felt heavy & dense. The resonance was very low and sluggish. In retrospect I wish I had brought something to clear that space – it needed a deep clearing.
With Those who Have Passed, the Divine Feminine, & Spiritual Guides,
When I do energy healings with clients, I’ve had an array of different experiences.
- Energetically, supportive family members (including pets) may be present in a healing (both living or deceased) – this can match the resonance of the heart – it felt warm & loving.
- The frequency of the divine feminine or masculine has been helpful for many healings – they both have different tones & qualities. For me, the divine feminine feels vibrant, loving & flowing. The divine masculine feels clear, present, expansive.
- Spiritual Guides can be present in the healing – I’ve had a couple of times where the presence of Jesus or Archangel Michael sears the room. The energy felt bold, high resonance and expansive.
My clair-sentient abilities started out with a whisper, but with guidance, practice & experience they evolved to be one of my strongest abilities. I’ve given distance healings with individuals in different parts of the world – so it is not about being in the same room with a person.
I’ve also learned that I attune to things differently than others in the same situation. I might use my clair-sentience to notice whether a client is grounded, but they might attune into it with a different clair.
We each have our own unique way to attune to our abilities. There will be probably be similarities to others, but with subtle differences.
Practice Not Perfection
Attuning to your sixth sense takes practice & intention. I have had many moments where I subconsciously tone down my abilities, miss opportunities and sometimes think my own stuff is someone else’s (sorry to my husband).
Notice in your life where you’re already using this sense more naturally – continue from there. It might be easiest with a child, partner, friend or at work. Where do you use some of your abilities without even thinking about it?
So don’t aim for perfection, just play with this ability and have some fun with it.
