Trauma Versus Traumatic Experiences
Ever wonder why one event will traumatize one person and not another person? Traumatic events happen, but trauma is what happens on the inside of us in those experiences and how we interpret and internalize those events. If we experienced a traumatic event as a child and weren’t supported in that moment, we find a way to cope. Some examples of this are depressing your experience, dissociating – by feeling like you’re not in your body or going “blank”. These maladaptive coping choices were very wise choices for you as a child, in fact they often help a person receive safety, acceptance, and love. When we continue to use these maladaptive coping strategies into adulthood, we get stuck and often experience mental health problems or addictions.
